The Martial Arts - an overview of the fighting arts

E-books, why not just regular books?:

There are several good reasons why so called electronic books can be a great alternative to the ordinary paper book. The main reason is that they can be delivered in digital form by e-mail, web, FTP, CD etc. This means that the book can be delivered almost instantly. Another great benefit is that they can be updated and built upon. For more on this topic, got to this page (click here!).

In addition to reading up on e-books, do make sure you have a look at all the free stuff inside 'The Martial Arts Vault'!

Below you will find e-books on various topics and a brief description of each book. Click on each item if you wish to learn more. If you don't find anything on audio-books here, the reason is that they have their own page: martial arts audio-books. And of coures, if you're not interested in e-books: go to the the regular books page instead!

Conflict management e-books:

Conflict Management can be seen as "verbal self-defense". As such it is a valuable set of tools for anyone who want to reduce the risk of becoming a victim of violence, who are into teaching or training martial arts, or who are in a line of work where people may use threats, intimidation, verbal aggression, "foul play", bullying etc.

How to Deal With Verbal Aggression, by Robert Agar-Hutton

This great book is written by an Englishman: Robert Agar-Hutton. He has a background from martial arts (karate and tai chi).

"How to Deal With Verbal Aggression" is a work book, and as such a great way to learn these skills properly, in a step-by-step manner.

Here he discusses (amongst other things) various ways in which we express anger, and how to deal with it.
The book takes an exciting look at the principles of Cybernetics,  how to ask correct and non-aggressive questions, the fight or flight responses, and much more.

Teaching e-books:

As a teacher I for one know that we can need all the help we can get! The education never stops, that's for sure! There are several books that I recommend on the topic. You can rest assured that I won't recommend any book that I don't like and that I don't find useful.

Secrets of Teaching Martial Arts More Effectively, by Keith Pascal

Keith Pascal is a teacher by profession, as well as a martial arts instructor. In this book he draws on his vast experience to help others become better at teaching martial arts.

Don't let yourself be fooled by the cover of this book (it looks not too professional..), because this is a very good product!

He has a lot of great advice and methods to offer, and he stresses that there is no magic involved, just sound and proven principles.

I can recommend this book to anyone who wishes to improve their teaching (or training) skills. Go to Kerwin Benson Publishing (click here) to read more. You'll find it under "Products".

Self-defense/martial arts e-books:

Inner Secrets of Martial Arts: What You Need to Become Truly Great, by Rod Turner

In this book Rod Turner has some interesting takes on chi (ki), as well as other topics like mental training, (visualization), affirmations, fear (fight or flight response), and handling fear.

He discusses the ideal of the Martial Arts and some of the arts involved (karate, taekwondo, judo, jujitsu etc.).
The author gives som valuable advice on nutrition and liquids, as well as on practical self-defense.

All in all this is abook that cover many topics, but don't go too deep on any of them. It is a great book for the beginner or intermediate student. Anyone who has been doing this for many years may have heard some or all of this before though.

I'd suggest you'd learn more by clicking here, and reading the reviews. Have a look around and see if anything catches your fancy!

I hear You Say Women Can't Defend Themselves?' by Torbjorn Arntsen

Here, yours truly has set out to show (preferably once and for all), that women can defend themselves against male aggressors - and that is even before they have done any martial arts or selfdefense training!

Men like to believe that females need us to "protect them". Funny, since we are also the aggressor... Talk about putting the fox to guard the hen-house :-)

Sure, most men are not rapists and predators, but that's beside the point here. Our ladies are most of the times more than capable of taking care of themselves!

Our "job" should be to support them, to help them install (or rather bring out!) that warrior mentality which is a human trait (not a male trait!), and also to teach them how to fight back more effectively - IF they ask for help...

This book series shows hundreds upon hundreds (tousands actually) of short success stories about women who fought back - mentally, verbally, physically.
It is updated on a regular basis, and is a great resource for anyone interested in the topic! Volume eleven is now under way. Read more: Women Can Defend Themselves!
