The Martial Arts - an overview of the fighting arts

Let's face it - teaching martial arts isn't for everyone. That's a shame really, because this is a fantastic way of reaching your own potential by helping others reaching theirs!

On this page we will discuss the ins and outs of teaching martial arts to adults and youngsters. On other pages you can find books about teaching martial arts, as well as other relevant subjects that will be added by and by. There are many resources for anyone interested in teaching martial arts. Eventually we will try covering them all.

The art of teaching an art:

The way I see it there are five main sides (and subsequent challenges) to teaching any martial art:

Pedagogy: Methodology, planning, feedback, structures, evaluation etc.

Techniques: The amount of intricate physical movements and combinations

Physiology: Speed, strength, endurance, flexibility, coordination etc.

"Fighting": Psychology, focus, drive, self-defense, will, fear, pain etc.

The art: History, philosophy, culture, ethics, moral, traditions etc.

What makes a true teaching martial arts teacher an artist is that all this five sides are of equal importance. If you take away the art bit then you may be a great fighting coach, but you may still miss peaces to the puzzle - or, you may be a great "story-teller", but it's nothing like stepping out and guiding someone "hands on" - or you may be a fantastic physical coach, but you don't know all the "moves" and how to combine them.

So, when we start to present the art of teaching we will try to guide you through all these five "gates". We can't cover it all here, but we'll try pointing in the right direction :-)

One of the reasons we can't even think about covering all the major topics is because the arts are truly different. What is correct or ok in one art is not even close to ok in another art.

What are the best parts of teaching martial arts?:

Heyyy - poetry :-)

These are some of the reason why teaching budo or the fighting arts is a thing that you really ought to consider:

You will be better in your chosen art

You will receive positive things: "Give and you will receive"

You will understand your art far better by teaching it to others

You can stay motivated far better by teaching and training (more "tools")

You get to know many great people

You have the possibility to make a living out of your hobby

You learn how to communicate and present yourself, your thoughts and ideas

You get to meet other experienced teachers to a greater extent

You may travel more often

You learn more about how the body and the mind "works"

You start to build a valuable network

More to follow...
